Rin first appeared after InuYasha used the Kaze no Kizu on Sesshomaru. The Tenseiga saved Sesshomaru and transported him to a forest glade near Rin's village. While in the forest, Rin saw Sesshomaru in a feral state. He tried to frighten her away, but failed. Later, Rin returned to give Sesshomaru fish and mushrooms, which Sesshomaru rudely refused, telling her he did not eat human food. The village men later caught and beat Rin for taking fish from the preserve. When Rin visited him again, Sesshomaru asked where she had gotten the bruises from. This made Rin smile because she thought Sesshomaru was concerned, even as he brusquely retracted the question at her silence.

Upon returning to her hut, Rin discovered an intruder stealing from her cooking pot. The intruder then left to resume his flight from Koga and the yokai wolves he commanded. Koga wanted the shard of the Shikon no Tama that the intruder stole. After killing the man and retrieving the shard, Koga casually gives his wolves permission to attack the village. Rin sees the slaughter and runs into the forest, searching for Sesshomaru. Rin cannot find him in time, however, and the wolves catch up to her as she trips over a tree root.
After recovering, Sesshomaru is about to depart the area when he catches the scent of blood. (He was able to identify the specific scent of Rin because he had smelled it when Rin was hurt on the face and near him.) He and Jaken walk through the forest until they find Rin's mauled and lifeless body. Remembering Rin's smile and stating aloud that he wished to test his sword again, he uses Tenseiga to resurrect Rin, much to Jaken's disbelief. After setting Rin on her feet again, Sesshomaru walks away, leaving the dumbfounded Jaken and a wide-eyed Rin standing on the path. Still mute, Rin follows Sesshoumaru throughout his journey.
The next time Rin appears, she is wearing a colorful kimono and is thoroughly obedient and devoted to Sesshomaru and Jaken. She now talks and acts more like a typical child.
[edit] Appearance
Rin is of average height and stature for her age. She has long black hair with a small portion of it tied in a small ponytail on the right side of her head. For most of the series she is seen wearing a white and orange checked kimono with green circles on it tied with a green obi (sash).
[edit] Relationships
[edit] Sesshomaru
Rin and Sesshomaru.Several times during the series and movies, Sesshomaru shows a protective instinct towards Rin. It is clearly evident that she has given him something to protect, which is what Sesshomaru's father wanted his elder son to have. Though Sesshomaru never admits that he has any sort of care or concern for a lowly human, Rin and Jaken were in Sesshomaru's thoughts as he used Tenseiga in concert with InuYasha's Tessaiga to defeat the rampaging So'unga in InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler. In the same movie, when the So'unga has InuYasha under his control Sesshomaru tries to run to save Rin and Jaken before InuYasha slashes at them, though Kagome was the one to save them when she told him to "sit".
In episode 162, Rin is captured by a demon who entrances children with a flute, then traps them in a cave to sell to other demons later. Rin seats herself amongst the other frightened children and calmly waits for Sesshomaru to rescue her, considering him much more powerful than this demon and remembering that he has come to her rescue many times before. She confesses to the children that she fears bandits more than demons because bandits kill for no reason, something the other children do not understand.
When an itinerant group of monks bent on destroying all demons who cross their paths hears of the children being taken, they seek out the cave and destroy the demon. Although Rin expresses her intention to wait for Sesshomaru, the leader and most powerful of the monks, Ungai, begins to carry her off with them by force, while she struggles and calls out for Sesshomaru. In actuality, Sesshomaru is already present, concealed in the surrounding forest, and it is not clear if it is his intention to intervene or if he means to allow the monks to take Rin with them (perhaps believing that she would be better off living among humans). Upon hearing Rin calling for him again, he decides to reveal his presence to them.
The monks try to destroy Sesshomaru using the same technique as they had just used on the demon which was stealing the children: the subordinate monks encircle Sesshomaru, removing rosaries of sutra beads from their kimonos to hold as they cast paper sutras at him. Ungai then uses the focus stone in his staff to send purifying energy to the various sutras, rather like sending a radio signal to detonators. However, Sesshomaru is a daiyokai, and therefore possesses far greater powers than any other demon the monks have apparently faced. When the smoke clears, Sesshomaru stands where he was, looking unharmed and irritated.
Undeterred by the idea that they have a much more powerful foe than in previous battles, Ungai orders his monks to 'bind his legs' as Sesshomaru begins to walk towards Ungai and the captive Rin. The other monks surround him and encircle Sesshomaru in a barrier, symbolized by blue flames in a ring on the ground at Sesshomaru's feet. Ungai then firmly plants his staff in the ground, activating the purifying energy of the barrier. Sesshomaru at this point begins to completely lose his temper, and places his hand upon Tôkijin's hilt. But then Ungai directs a surge of his own purification powers through the focus stone at Sesshomaru, and Sesshomaru releases Tôkijin's hilt. His rage is so great that he begins to transform, and in the moment just before his transformation, when his full yôki is at his command, Sesshomaru uses it to shatter the focus stone at the head of Ungai's staff. The ensuing explosion also destroys the monks' sutra-bead rosaries and knocks the monks from their feet, including Ungai, and frees Rin from his grip.
Rin begins to run after Sesshomaru, but Ungai calls out to her, telling her that she belongs with humans, that a demon like Sesshomaru doesn't care about her. Suddenly uncertain, Rin remembers Jaken telling her that she will eventually die, and likely long before Sesshomaru establishes the empire he is bent on creating. With his back turned to the scene, Sesshomaru tells Rin to do as she wishes. Ungai sees her hesitation and thinks he has saved her, but Rin simply smiles warmly, waves farewell, and runs off after Sesshomaru. Once they rejoin Jaken, Rin spots several graves along their path, and she sweetly asks Sesshomaru not to forget her if she should die. Sesshomaru's answer is an expression of surprise and he utters the words: "Don't say such silly things". This has been widely interpreted as meaning that Sesshomaru considers such a request unnecessary, because he could never forget Rin. The thought of her death is too uncomfortable for him to allow him to discuss it.
Rin has recently been linked to the maturing of Sesshomaru's sword, Tenseiga. In Chapter 467 of the InuYasha manga, Rin and Kohaku are taken by the "Dog from hell". Sesshomaru follows the dog to kill it, but intends on saving Rin and Kohaku. Sesshomaru's mother makes a comment that "it can't be helped that some sacrifices are needed for the sword to mature". The next frame shows Rin unconscious and in bad shape.
In Chapter 468, Sesshomaru's mother mentions that as her son goes on the "Path of Darkness", Rin will die. At the end of the chapter, Kohaku says that Rin is not breathing which leaves Sesshomaru with a look of disbelief and shock. In Chapter 469, Sesshomaru tries to revive her by using Tenseiga, however, he could not see any Pallbearers of the Afterlife. Rin's lifeless body is then taken by the master of Hell. Sesshomaru and Kohaku choose to go down the path where there is Rin's scent to rescue her. By choosing this path, both Sesshomaru and Kohaku lose their only chance of going through the portal which Sesshomaru's mother created to get back to the real world. According to Sesshomaru's mother, once the portal that she creates to get back to the real world closes, then they will never be able to get back to the real world. As of Chapter 470, Rin appears dead and revival using the Tenseiga is not possible (a person cannot be revived by Tenseiga more than once). In chapter 471, Sesshomaru's mother revives Rin when she, Sesshomaru, and Kohaku return from the Land of the Dead, using her Meidou-stone. After, she wonders if reviving Rin makes Sesshomaru happy, and Jaken says that it does. Sesshomaru's mother also makes a comment about how he has become like his father in a strange way.
Rin and Jaken as seen in the manga.
[edit] Jaken
Jaken was amazed that Sesshomaru revived Rin. He is sometimes annoyed about Rin following Sesshomaru and the tiny bit of kindness he shows toward Rin. Jaken calls Rin a stupid, foolish girl from time to time. Her unflinching obedience to Sesshomaru's commands helps Jaken tolerate her. Despite how irritating Jaken thinks she is, he would never want to see Rin hurt or killed.
[edit] Ah-Un
Ah-Un,as potrayed in the anime series.Ah-Un has become like a watchdog to Rin. She is left in his care when Sesshomaru and Jaken go somewhere too dangerous for her to follow along. Rin also rides on Ah-Un to keep up with Sesshomaru or when she falls asleep.
[edit] Kohaku
Rin, Kohaku and SesshomaruRin befriends Kohaku, the demonslayer Sango's younger brother, while Kohaku acts as her guard when Naraku is using her for bait to lure Sesshomaru into battle. Later while under Naraku's influence, Kohaku attempts to kill Rin, having knocked her out and is about to bring down his sickle on her. Sesshomaru appears and is ready to kill him, but he is saved as Kagome and InuYasha arrive and shove Kohaku away from Rin. When she finally wakes up, Rin doesn't hesitate to run after Sesshomaru. Kohaku finds out what he did to her, and that it was Naraku that made him do it, and feels bad about it. But Rin soon forgives him, she is happy to see him the next time they meet in the series. In the recent manga chapters, Kohaku has been traveling with Sesshomaru, Rin and Jaken. Kohaku has grown more protective of Rin in a way similar to Sesshomaru. When the Hell Hound takes Kohaku and Rin to Hell, Kohaku is seen having his arm protectively over her. He later carries the unconscious Rin on his back when he follows Sesshomaru through the dark Hell. He also tries to keep her out of danger when Naraku threatens to taint the Shikon jewel shard in his back on which his life depends.
[edit] Kagome
Though Rin's appearance in Sesshomaru's entourage shocked Kagome, InuYasha and their companions, they have never been told the whole story. Swords of the Honorable Ruler makes her out to be a kindred spirit in Kagome. In the movie, Rin was willing to shield Kagome with her body, reciprocating Kagome's risky behavior earlier when she had saved Rin and Jaken from the rampaging InuYasha and So'unga. She also collected the shattered kotadama rosary after that incident so that Kagome could restring it.
